A new study by the platform Energiemegazin.com has taken a close look at the balcony solar market. The analysis was based on data from the Market Master Data Register as well as a survey of over 5,000 users who installed their plug-in solar systems (balcony power plants) within the past 12 months.
Here are some key findings:
- By the end of June 2025, over one million plug-in solar systems (balcony PV devices) were officially registered in Germany — an increase of about 30% compared to the beginning of the year.
- Since late 2022, when around 74,000 systems were recorded, the market has grown more than tenfold in just two and a half years. (To be precise, it’s the number of registrations that has increased tenfold.)
- The total installed capacity now amounts to just under 956 MWp, typically with 800 W feed-in power per system.
- North Rhine-Westphalia (203,288), Bavaria (154,475), and Lower Saxony (133,861) lead both in absolute numbers and relative to population size. In sparsely populated areas like Coburg or Friesland, there are as many as 57 systems per 1,000 inhabitants.
- City-states like Berlin, Hamburg, or Bremen show significantly lower system densities.
- Forecasts for 2025 predict an additional 500,000 to 600,000 new installations!
- Half of users already use battery storage alongside their systems!
The study includes many more fascinating insights.
