In the USA, Underwriters Laboratories (UL) is the primary trade group that creates electrical device standards. Most US states reference UL standards in some form, so this is an important node in standards development for plug-in solar.

In December 2025, UL created UL3700 as a new category for Plug-in Photovoltaic (PIPV) and published their "outline of investigation" - this is the first step towards creating a new standard. It's a technical document which discusses specific safety, installation, and testing requirements. The doc is sadly not freely available, but it can be found at https://www.shopulstandards.com/ProductDetail.aspx?UniqueKey=49440 and "previewed" if you create a free account. The more advocates who can be familiar with and participate in this standards development process, the better.
